Us Airstrike:British Navy to accompany UK ships crossing Strait of Hormuz
Britain’s Royal Navy will resume accompanying UK-flagged ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, British Defense secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement today.“I have instructed preparations for HMS Montrose and HMS Defender to return to accompanying duties of Red Ensign Shipping,” Wallace said. “The government will take all necessary steps to protect our ships and citizens at this time.”
The decision by the British government follows a severe increase in tensions in the region after the most senior Iranian military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, was killed in a US airstrike.
Some context: Iran has previously been accused of attacking vessels traveling through or anchored along the Strait of Hormuz and in July last year its Revolutionary Guard Corps seized a British-flagged tanker, the Stena Impero. The vessel was eventually released two months later.
