Monica was born Monica Denise Arnold on October 24, 1980, in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother, Marilyn, worked as a customer service representative for Delta Air Lines, and her father, Billy, was a freight company mechanic. Monica’s younger brother, Montez, was born in 1983, and she has a paternal half-brother, Jermond.

After her parents divorced in 1987, Monica’s mother married Reverend Edward Best, who is the uncle of rapper Ludacris. Monica began singing at the Jones Hill Chapel United Methodist Church when she was 2 years old, and as a teenager, she won more than 20 singing competitions.
