Matthew Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo popularly known as Obasanjo is a Nigerian politician was born on 5th March 1937, in the village of Ibogun-Olaogun in southwestern Nigeria.  He was born to a Christian and Yoruba family, His father was Amos Adigun Obaluayesanjo “Obasanjo” Bankole and his mother was Bernice Ashabi Bankole. He was the first of nine children; only he and a sister (Adunni Oluwole Obasanjo) survived childhood.

Obasanjo’s father was a farmer and Obasanjo was constantly involved in agricultural labour.  At Age eleven, he was encouraged by his parents to start an education at the local village primary school. After three years, in 1951, he moved on to the Baptist Day School in the Owu quarter of Abeokuta. In 1952 he transferred to the Baptist Boys’ High School, also in the same town. His school fees were partly financed by state grants.
