Brown started out his coaching career as a student coach of wide receivers at Florida State from 1973 to 1974. From 1975 to 1977 he was the wide receivers coach at Southern Miss. Brown worked as the WR coach at Memphis State in 1978 and Iowa State in 1979. He was promoted to offensive coordinator at Iowa State from 1980 to 1981.

Brown became quarterbacks coach for LSU in 1982 and got his first head coaching job for Appalachian State in 1983. In 1984 he was the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma.
