Rob Ryan was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma in December 1962. He is the son of NFL coach Buddy Ryan and the twin brother of NFL coach Rex Ryan. Rob Ryan played defensive end for Southwestern Oklahoma State.
He started out his career as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky in 1987. Ryan served as the outside linebackers coach for Ohio State in 1988. From 1989 to 1993 he was the running backs, linebackers, and defensive line coach for Tennessee State. Ryan was the defensive backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 1994 to 1995.
In 1995 he was the defensive coordinator for Hutchinson Community College. Ryan was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State from 1997 to 1999. From 2000 to 2003 he was the linebackers coach for the New England Patriots.
From 2004 to 2008 he was the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders. Ryan would go onto be the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2009 to 2010, the Dallas Cowboys from 2011 to 2012, and the New Orleans Saints from 2012 to 2015.
In 2016 he was hired by his brother Rex to be the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. During his coaching career Rob Ryan won the Super Bowl in 2001 and 2003.
